Culture And Food

CULTURE

Descendants of African slaves form the vast majority of Jamaica’s population. The slaves brought with them their own traditions, culture and food, like ackees. The entire Jamaican culture is influenced from people all around the world. The ackee took root in Jamaica and is today a stable ingredient to the island's cuisine. Slavery was also behind the arrival of the breadfruit.

Jamaican motto is “Out of many, one people” which means, that all kind of people from around the world are just one in Jamaica. We saw Indian people, white Jamaican, chinese etc.  They also have a saying In Jamaica that;“When you come to Jamaica, it doesn’t matter where you are, or who you are, you are a Jamaican”.  At some point, we kind of felt like a true Jamaican, and we really loved that feeling.

FOOD

Jamaica may be small, but its people are rich ethnic melting part. You have the curry from India, you have the national fruit of jamaica, ackee, from west Africa, you have the breadfruit from Polynesia, rice from the far east and all kinds of mixture of all the types of food.

Our tour guide told us a very funny story related to the Jamaican food. After the 2008 Olympic games, Jamaican athletes stole the show with the Olympics, winning 11 medals including 6 golds. Runner such as Usain bolt, Asafa Powell and shelly- Ann Fraser, surprised the world with their power and speed.A story spread on the internet, claiming that the international Olympic committee decided to ban Jamaican food, saying it had the qualities of a performance enhancing drug. When the guide finished telling us this story, we started laughing, because it didn’t make sense.

So, we decided to put the food to the test. We ate ackee, breadfruit and salted fish, which are rich in protein. It was sooooo delicious, we literally couldn’t stop eating it.
But it didn’t do much for our performance. We barely managed to run some laps so we agreed that we better leave it to the professionals.
