Culture And Food

CULTURE

Descendants of African slaves form the vast majority of Jamaica’s population. The slaves brought with them their own traditions, culture and food, like ackees. The entire Jamaican culture is influenced from people all around the world. The ackee took root in Jamaica and is today a stable ingredient to the island's cuisine. Slavery was also behind the arrival of the breadfruit.

Famous People From Jamaica

Jamaica is maybe best known for its music and for their sports athletes.
From day one we knew that sport and music had a great impact on the Jamaican culture. And when we landed in Jamaica we could see how important it was for them. Especially when they have big role models and idols like Bob Marley and Usain Bolt.

Geography and environment

Jamaica is a beautiful place; it is the third largest island in the Caribbean. The capital is Kingston; Kingston harbour is the seventh largest harbour in the world.  When we were there the climate was very hot, but when we went to the inland it was warmer. Jamaica is near the hurricane belt of the Atlantic Ocean, so sometimes the island suffers of storm damage. 31,1% of the land consists of forest. Compared with Norway`s area, Jamaica has more forest.

Our history with Christopher Columbus

When we were in Jamaica, we were on excursion with a Guide and learned something new about Christopher Columbus and slavery and sugar plantations.

The Historical Spanish Town

The other city we visited was Spanish Town. Spanish Town is the second largest city in Jamaica, moreover it is also the former capital of Jamaica. It is located in the St. Catherine parish, in the southeast of Jamaica. The town has one of the oldest Anglican Churches outside England. The population of the city is over 140 000. The Olympic winning sprinter Asafa Powell is from Spanish Town.

Kingston, what an experience

Kingston is the capital of Jamaica, with over 937 000 inhabitants. Because Kingston became the official administration site for the British colonial government the city has been the capital since 1872. The city consists of two main parts, centrum and New Kingston. We chose to go to this city first.

Jamaica me crazy

Jamaica is a Caribbean island country that is located south of Cuba. It is also a dramatically mountainous island, and it is surprisingly affordable when  you compare it with other countries in the Caribbean. The population in Jamaica is  about 2.8 million and its economy is mainly dependent on tourism, coffee and other exports, and Jamaica has an important history with Christopher Columbus. Jamaica is probably most famous for its stunning beaches and its festive, fun culture and its unique food. And these are our main reasons of why we want to spend our vacation in Jamaica.
